“Somedays” Never Happen on Their Own

What “somedays” do you have? You know the type: Someday I’ll visit [insert exotic location here]. Someday I’ll be a [insert dream job here]. Someday I’ll be able to [insert fitness goal here].

Don’t just sit and wait for someday to come because it won’t. “Somedays” never happen on their own. They need planning, they need intention and they need work.

Whatever that “someday” is, today is the day to start making it happen. The arguments that come up against this are normally around the goal being too far, too big or too lofty. Good! The fact that they are big and lofty goals means they need more work. So the sooner you get working on them, the sooner they will become a reality.

These goals aren’t necessarily impossible even if they seem to be. But they probably need some focus and intentionality.

It’s a little bit like going to school to earn your degree. It takes years to complete your schooling, with many hours of lectures and study. It’s a daily choice of: do I study or do I do something more interesting and fun? And there are bigger choices to make, such as what courses to sign up for and which professors to study with. But all these choices are the bricks that build up the path you take to earn your degree.

The challenge with our “somedays” is that we don’t have a school to keep us honest with a curriculum, schedules and guidelines. We need to chart our own path. And it’s up to us to stick to that path. But that’s also the beauty of our “somedays” – we choose to work towards these goals in our own way.

What are some of your “somedays?” What’s one thing you can do today to start building your path towards achieving them?
